Izumi City Kubo So Memorial Museum

A Cultural Space for Discovering the Beauty of East Asian Art

The Izumi City Kubo So Memorial Museum is a municipal art museum located in Uchida-cho, Izumi City, Osaka Prefecture. The museum specializes in traditional East Asian art and was established thanks to the generous donation of approximately 500 antique artworks, land, buildings, and a ¥300 million fund by Kubo Sotaro (1926–1984), the third-generation president of Kubo So Co., Ltd., a prominent textile company that had operated in Izumi since the Meiji period.

The museum opened in 1982. The original donation included the main museum building and a tea house. In 1997, Kubo Tsunehiko, the fifth-generation head of the Kubo So family, donated a newly constructed annex. Further donations followed in 1999, when a music hall, creative studio, and civic gallery were provided through the Kubo So Memorial Cultural Foundation. A research building was added in 2006 through the same foundation.

A Remarkable Collection of Japanese and East Asian Art

The museum’s collection has continued to grow through additional donations and now comprises approximately 11,000 works, including two National Treasures and 29 Important Cultural Properties.

Many of the works belong to the Kubo So Collection, which is divided into five groups, from the First Collection to the Fifth Collection, according to when and how the works were acquired.
