Izumi Tako - Octopus

A Tender and Naturally Sweet Specialty of the Senshu Region

Izumi Tako is a local octopus specialty from the waters off the Senshu region of Osaka. It is particularly popular for its tender texture and naturally sweet flavor.

Part of Osaka’s Local “Osaka Mon” Produce

Osaka Prefecture uses the name “Osaka Mon” for agricultural, forestry, and fishery products produced in Osaka, as well as processed foods made from these local ingredients. The initiative promotes the use of local products while supporting Osaka’s agricultural, forestry, fishery, and food industries.

Among these local products, octopus caught in the waters off Senshu is particularly well regarded. The fishing grounds have abundant food sources, including shrimp and crabs, while the relatively gentle currents provide a suitable environment for the octopus to grow. These conditions are associated with its soft meat and naturally sweet taste.

A Registered Regional Brand

“Izumi Tako” is registered with the Japan Patent Office as a regional collective trademark, recognizing it as a regional brand associated with the Senshu area.

Local Products Made with Izumi Tako

Izumi Tako is also used in locally developed specialty products. Examples include curry made with Izumi Tako and Senshu onions and takomeshi seasoning mix, which allows visitors to enjoy the flavor of Senshu octopus in a variety of dishes.

Season

The main season for Izumi Tako is July through December. During this period, the octopus is enjoyed as one of the characteristic seafood specialties of the Senshu region.
