Miyakojima Ward (Osaka City)

A District Where Urban Life and Nature Come Together

Miyakojima Ward is one of the 24 administrative wards of Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture. It is a diverse area where residential neighborhoods and commercial districts coexist.

The southern part of the ward is centered around the lively Kyobashi district, while much of the northern and central areas are residential. Since the 1980s, redevelopment of former industrial sites has led to the construction of high-rise residential complexes, beginning with Bell Park City. Today, these neighborhoods are home to many residents and form an important part of the urban landscape of northeastern Osaka.

Tourist Attractions, Historic Sites, and Facilities

Miyakojima Ward offers a combination of riverside scenery, parks, historic sites, and cultural facilities, making it an interesting area to explore beyond Osaka’s major tourist centers.

Okawa River and Its Riverside Scenery

The Okawa River was once part of the Yodo River system and flows through Miyakojima Ward. In spring, cherry trees along the river burst into bloom, attracting many visitors for hanami, the traditional Japanese custom of enjoying cherry blossoms.

The walking paths along the river are ideal for leisurely strolls, while the changing scenery throughout the seasons offers a pleasant way to experience Osaka’s natural side.

Kyobashi, in the southern part of Miyakojima Ward, is a lively commercial and entertainment district visited by people from Osaka and neighboring areas.

Near Kyobashi, the area along the Neyagawa River is lined with restaurants and shopping facilities and is also popular with visitors looking to experience the city’s local atmosphere.

History of Miyakojima Ward

Miyakojima Ward was established in 1943, when it was separated from Kita Ward and Asahi Ward.

There are several theories concerning the origin of the name “Miyakojima.” One connects it to the place name “Miyakōjima,” while another associates the name with the historical presence of a capital or imperial city.

During the era of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the area around southern Kyobashi prospered as a post town along the Kyokaido, an important route connecting Osaka and Kyoto. A commercial district subsequently developed during the Edo period.

From the Meiji period onward, the expansion of Osaka transformed former rural areas into residential and industrial districts. The population continued to grow after World War II, and the area prospered particularly through the textile and light manufacturing industries.

From the 1970s, however, the movement of factories to suburban areas contributed to the decline of industrial sites within the city. Redevelopment followed, including the construction of Bell Park beginning in 1982. The area’s convenient location close to central Osaka contributed to its renewed development as a residential district.

Geography

Miyakojima Ward lies on the Osaka Plain, and the entire ward is relatively flat.

The Yodo River, Okawa River, and Neyagawa River flow through or around the area. The former Enami River, which was reclaimed during the 1950s, has also been transformed in places into parkland.
