Satsukiyama Park

Nature, Hiking and Panoramic Views over Osaka

Satsukiyama Park, also known as Satsukiyama Green Space, is a scenic urban park in Ikeda City, Osaka Prefecture. Located on the lower and middle slopes of Mount Satsukiyama, the park combines rich natural surroundings with hiking trails, observation decks, a small zoo, and other attractions.

The park is managed by Ikeda City and has been developed as an urban park since 1949. With its easy access from the city center and beautiful views over the Osaka Plain, it is a popular destination for both local residents and visitors.

A Mountain Park at the Foot of Mount Satsukiyama

Mount Satsukiyama rises to 315.1 meters above sea level, and Satsukiyama Park extends from its foothills toward the middle of the mountain.

The park is home to several attractions, including Satsukiyama Zoo and the Urban Greening Botanical Garden. Together with the surrounding forests and walking trails, these facilities make the park an enjoyable place to spend several hours surrounded by nature.

Hiking Trails and Scenic Viewpoints

Five Observation Decks Over the Osaka Plain

Satsukiyama Park has a network of hiking trails and several observation points. From the park’s five observation decks, visitors can enjoy broad views across the Osaka Plain.

One of the best-known viewpoints is the Hinomaru Observation Deck, located at an elevation of approximately 314.9 meters near the summit. Built in 1964, it has long been a popular destination for local residents and visitors looking for panoramic views.

The combination of forest trails and open viewpoints makes Satsukiyama an appealing place for a short hike away from the busy urban areas of Osaka.

Seasonal Beauty

Cherry Blossoms, Azaleas, and Autumn Colors

Satsukiyama is known for its beautiful seasonal scenery. Cherry blossoms make the park especially popular in spring, while azaleas add further color to the landscape. In autumn, the forests turn vivid shades of red and gold, attracting visitors for the traditional Japanese activity of enjoying autumn foliage.

The park has been selected as one of the “100 Best Greenery Spots in Osaka”, recognizing its importance as a scenic natural area within the urban environment.

Meet the Animals at Satsukiyama Zoo

Forest Palette – A Hands-On Animal Experience

In 2014, the Satsukiyama Animal Interaction Zoo, “Forest Palette,” opened within the park. The facility provides opportunities for children to interact more closely with animals in a relaxed setting.

With its educational focus as well as its entertainment value, the facility has become a popular attraction for families. It offers children a chance to discover animals while enjoying the natural environment of Satsukiyama.

A Monument to a Beloved Children’s Song

On May 5, 1963, a stone monument commemorating the children’s song “Hato Poppo” was installed in the park.

The monument honors Kume Higashi, a well-known Japanese lyricist of children’s songs. It remains a familiar cultural landmark within Satsukiyama and provides an interesting connection between the park and Japan’s tradition of children’s music.

Satsukiyama Driveway

A Scenic Mountain Road

Satsukiyama Park is also home to the Satsukiyama Driveway, a toll road operated by Ikeda City. The road runs through the mountains of Satsukiyama from Ayaha 2-chome to Hata 3-chome in Ikeda and provides a scenic route for visitors traveling through the mountain area.

Its official name is Satsukiyama Park Main Park Road, and it operates as a toll facility under Ikeda City’s urban park regulations.

The road passes near the Hinomaru Observation Deck before connecting with roads leading toward the Meiji-no-Mori Minoh Quasi-National Park and Minoh River Dam.

A Historic Toll Road

The driveway opened in 1958 and is considered one of Japan’s earliest toll roads. It provides access to the mountain scenery while also serving as a gateway to the wider natural areas around Minoh.

Current tolls are 700 yen for large or large-special-purpose vehicles and 300 yen for ordinary or small-special-purpose vehicles.

Pedestrians and bicycles can use the road free of charge. From the end of the driveway, it is also possible to continue onto nearby forest roads.
