History of Konohana Ward

From Fishing Villages to an Industrial Center

In the past, the area that is now Konohana Ward consisted largely of islands and sandbars near the mouth of the Yodo River, where fishing was an important industry. Sainenji Temple in Denpo served as an important Buddhist center in the area.

During the Edo period, large-scale land reclamation and new farmland development progressed. Some local place names still preserve the names of the people who were involved in these developments.

Industrial Development from the Meiji Period

From the Meiji period onward, factories were built throughout the area, transforming Konohana into one of Osaka’s major centers of heavy industry.

During World War II, the district suffered extensive damage from air raids. After the war, changes in Japan’s industrial structure led to the restructuring and transformation of the industrial waterfront.

Modern Redevelopment and Tourism

From the 1980s onward, as heavy industry declined, Konohana Ward began developing new industries centered on theme parks, entertainment, and leisure.

In 2001, Universal Studios Japan (USJ) opened and became a major attraction that helped stimulate the local economy and tourism industry.

The artificial island of Yumeshima later became the venue for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, bringing further international attention to the area.
