Illuminations That Reflect the Weather and Seasons
Another distinctive feature of the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel is its illumination display, which changes according to the weather and special occasions.
In the past, mercury lamps and neon tubes were used to create a simple color system: red for clear weather, green for cloudy weather, and blue for rainy weather. In 2014, LED lighting was introduced, allowing the Ferris wheel to create much more detailed and colorful visual effects.
Today, the illumination can display patterns inspired by the sun, clouds, umbrellas, and other motifs. Special illuminations are also created for seasonal events and celebrations, transforming the Ferris wheel into a spectacular light show against the night sky.
Features of the Gondolas
The Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel has 60 gondolas. Four of them are see-through cabins with transparent floors and seats, providing an especially unique experience as the city and waterfront can be viewed from directly beneath the cabin.
Three gondolas are designed to be more accessible for wheelchair users, with entrances approximately 20 centimeters wider than standard entrances, measuring 94 centimeters. These features allow a wider range of visitors to enjoy the Ferris wheel comfortably.
Comparison with Similar Ferris Wheels
The Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel shares the same builder as Cosmo Clock 21 in Yokohama, which opened in 1989. Because the two Ferris wheels have similar structures and nearly identical diameters, they are sometimes described as “sister” or “brother” Ferris wheels.
The former Palette Town Giant Sky Wheel in Odaiba, Tokyo, opened in 1999 and closed in 2022. Its diameter was also 100 meters, although its overall height was 115 meters, making it 2.5 meters taller than the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel.
