History of Minato Ward
Land Reclamation and the Development of New Rice Fields
During the Edo period, the area was part of a delta at the mouth of the Yodo River and consisted of small islands known collectively as Naniwa no Yashima.
Numerous areas of newly reclaimed agricultural land, known as shinden, were subsequently developed.

Ichioka Shinden: Developed in 1698 by Ichioka Yozaemon.
Minatoya Shinden: Developed in 1754 by Minatoya Kichizaemon and Kagaya Jinbei.
Yahataya Shinden: Developed in 1829 by Yahataya Chuhei.
Modern Development and Expansion of Osaka City
In 1871, Tenpocho in Nishinari District was established near Mount Tempozan.
As part of Osaka City’s first major municipal expansion in 1897, the area was incorporated into Nishi Ward. At the same time, development of Osaka Port progressed.
Commercial areas and industrial districts developed along the city tram routes, while amusement parks, athletic grounds, and other recreational facilities were also established.
Tempozan became the center of tourism in Minato Ward. A variety of leisure facilities, including Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, are concentrated here.
The waterfront was developed as one of Osaka’s pioneering modern waterfront projects during the 1990s, and the area has since attracted large numbers of visitors.
