Dotonbori

Osaka, the City of Foodie Foods

Restaurants and bars are concentrated on the south bank of the Dotonbori River, and the area is a bustling entertainment district with huge three-dimensional signs and various buildings such as the Dotonbori Glico sign, Kani Doraku Honten, Shochikuza, Nakaza Kuidaore Building, Kinryu Ramen, Namba Dotonbori Hotel, and many more.

You can enjoy a lively “kuidaore” town with many stores where you can taste Osaka’s traditional specialties such as takoyaki, kushikatsu, and okonomiyaki.

A promenade called “Tombori River Walk” has been constructed along both banks of the river from Nihonbashi to Ukiniwa Bridge, allowing visitors to enjoy the shopping areas of Dotonbori and Soemon-cho from the riverbank.

In addition, boat landing areas have been established and set up at Nihonbashi, Tazaemon Bridge, and Minatomachi, and pleasure boats (Tombori River Cruise DOTON and Aqua Mini Suito-go) depart from these areas.

The name “Dotonbori” comes from the name of Yasui Doton (容易・どうトン), who opened the river with his private fortune in 1612.

Later, the area flourished as an entertainment district for plays and kabuki, and teahouses and other establishments grew, evolving into the food and live entertainment district of today.

The only theater as a playhouse is the Shochikuza near Ebisubashi Bridge, but there are also comedy halls. Restaurants of various genres line both sides of Dotonbori Dori, making it a bustling place all year round.

On the roof of the Daruma Building, the “Daruma Minister” is a popular attraction with its spinning mechanism.
