A Leading Comedy Theater in Osaka

Opening in 1987
Namba Grand Kagetsu opened as a newly constructed theater on November 1, 1987, replacing the aging Namba Kagetsu theater. It has approximately 900 seats, including 858 fixed seats and additional auxiliary seats used during busy periods, and is one of Japan’s largest theaters dedicated primarily to comedy and theatrical entertainment.
The theater attracts both local residents and visitors from across Japan and overseas, making it a popular place to experience a distinctive aspect of Osaka culture.
The Nickname “NGK”
The theater is affectionately known throughout Osaka simply as “NGK.” For local residents, it is a familiar destination for enjoying live comedy, while for visitors it offers an entertaining introduction to one of Osaka’s most recognizable cultural traditions.
Live Performances Throughout the Day
Performances are generally held twice on weekdays and three to four times on weekends and public holidays. About 15 minutes before the main performance begins, young comedians give a short maesetsu, or opening talk, to warm up the audience.
One of the greatest attractions of NGK is the energy of a live performance. Comedians can respond directly to the audience, creating an atmosphere that cannot be reproduced on television. The reactions of the audience are part of the experience, giving each performance a unique sense of spontaneity and excitement.
The History of Namba Grand Kagetsu
From Namba Kagetsu to NGK
The history of Namba Grand Kagetsu began in 1987, when the theater was built as the successor to the aging Namba Kagetsu. For a period after the opening, both theaters operated at the same time, until Namba Kagetsu closed in 1988.
The Opening Performance Featuring Downtown
When Namba Grand Kagetsu opened on November 1, 1987, the promotional commercial for its opening featured Downtown, a comedy duo that was already enormously popular in the Kansai region at the time.
Yoshimoto Shinkigeki Becomes a Daily Feature
Yoshimoto Shinkigeki was not performed at NGK during its first several years. After Umeda Kagetsu closed on March 31, 1990, however, daily Yoshimoto Shinkigeki performances began at NGK on April 1.
This helped establish Namba Grand Kagetsu as a major home for Yoshimoto Shinkigeki and strengthened its role as a center of Osaka comedy.
The Transformation of NGK Hall
When the theater first opened, it also contained a studio called NGK Hall, later renamed NGK Studio, which was used for television program recordings. The space was subsequently renovated as Yoshimoto ∞ Hall Osaka and was also used for major comedy competitions such as the M-1 Grand Prix and R-1 Grand Prix.
The space closed during the major renovation in 2012 and was later converted into an area for selling souvenirs.
From General Admission to Reserved Seating
When NGK first opened, seating was unreserved. From around 2001, reserved seating was gradually introduced in connection with fire-safety regulations and other requirements. The theater is now entirely reserved seating.
This change brought stricter limits on admission and contributed to higher ticket prices, while also creating a more comfortable environment for audiences.
Major Renovations and Modern Improvements
A major renovation was carried out in 2012. The work included replacing audience seats, improving barrier-free facilities, and renewing the tenant spaces.
Another renovation took place in 2017, including seismic reinforcement, renewed tenant spaces, retro-style interiors for the theater entrance and backstage areas, and a new exhibition area.
Through these renovations, Namba Grand Kagetsu has continued to evolve while maintaining its role as one of Osaka’s best-known comedy venues.

Namba Grand Kagetsu is conveniently located just a few minutes’ walk from Namba Station on the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line. The theater is also easily accessible by subway, JR trains, Nankai Railway, Kintetsu Railway, and Hanshin Railway.
