MIRAIZA OSAKA-JO

A Historic Complex in Front of Osaka Castle

MIRAIZA OSAKA-JO is a multipurpose commercial and cultural complex located inside Osaka Castle Park in Chuo Ward, Osaka City. The facility was created by renovating the historic former headquarters building of the Japanese Army’s Fourth Division.

The building was once used as the Osaka City Museum. Today, it has been transformed into a destination where Osaka’s history, culture, dining, and modern tourism come together, while preserving the character of its historic architecture.

History of the Former Osaka City Museum

The Birth of the Osaka City Museum

The Osaka City Museum opened in 1960 using the former headquarters building of the Japanese Army’s Fourth Division. During the 1960s, it became an important place for introducing Osaka’s history and culture to local residents and visitors.

The museum closed in 2001 following the opening of the Osaka Museum of History. However, the historic building was preserved and eventually given a new purpose when it reopened as MIRAIZA OSAKA-JO in 2017.

Construction of the Fourth Division Headquarters

The former Fourth Division Headquarters was constructed in 1929 as part of a commemorative project marking the enthronement ceremonies of Emperor Showa, which also included the reconstruction of Osaka Castle Tower.

The project was led by the City of Osaka. The Fourth Division’s Accounting Department was responsible for the design, while Shimizugumi carried out the construction. Work began in April 1929 and was completed in March 1931.

The building is primarily based on the Romanesque style. Its solid stone-like appearance and castle-like design give it a distinctive historic character that fits naturally into the surroundings of Osaka Castle.

Military Headquarters and Postwar Uses

The building was initially used as a military facility. In 1940, the headquarters of the Central Army also moved into the building.

Although Osaka suffered extensive damage during the air raids of World War II, the headquarters building survived without being destroyed. After the war, it was requisitioned by the GHQ and was later used as the headquarters of the Osaka Prefectural Police.

In 1958, the building came under the management of the City of Osaka.

The Building as the Osaka City Museum

Opening of the Museum

After the Osaka Prefectural Police moved elsewhere, plans were made to use the historic building as the Osaka City Museum. Preparations for the museum proceeded with support from other museums and private collectors.

The museum partially opened on December 1, 1960, before fully opening in 1962. Over the years, the museum collected approximately 70,000 historical materials related to Osaka, establishing itself as an important center for learning about the city’s history.

Citizen Activities and the Museum’s Friends’ Association

In 1982, the museum’s supporters’ organization, known as the Osaka City Museum Pal no Kai, was established. Members organized historical walking tours and other activities independently, creating opportunities for citizens to deepen their connection with the museum and learn more about the history of Osaka.

Closure and a New Future

The Osaka City Museum closed on March 31, 2001, following the opening of the Osaka Museum of History. The building remained unused for many years.

In April 2015, management of Osaka Castle Park was transferred to Osaka Castle Park Management Corporation, leading to new plans for the historic building and its future use.

A Historic Building Reborn as a Modern Complex

On October 19, 2017, the former Osaka City Museum reopened as MIRAIZA OSAKA-JO.

The name expresses the hope that the building would become a place where Osaka’s culture and entertainment come together and that it would contribute to the city’s future.
