Harimacho

Harimacho is associated with a story concerning Akamatsu Sadanori, a military commander who held the title of Harima no Kami and fought against the loyalist forces of Kusunoki Masatsura during the Nanboku-cho period.

Tezukayama

Tezukayama takes its name from Tezukayama Kofun, an ancient burial mound located in neighboring Sumiyoshi Ward. The area subsequently developed into a well-known upscale residential neighborhood.

Kitabatake

Kitabatake is associated with Kitabatake Akiie, a military leader of the Nanboku-cho period who is enshrined at Abeno Shrine. The name reflects the area’s connection with this important chapter of local history.

History of Abeno Ward

Abeno Ward was established on April 1, 1943, as part of a reorganization of Osaka City’s administrative wards. Before this reorganization, the area formed part of Sumiyoshi Ward. As the city developed and urbanized, the area was separated to form the present ward.

The origin of the ward’s name is commonly associated with the ancient Abe clan, which is believed to have governed this area in ancient times. The name is also said to be connected with a place name mentioned in a poem traditionally attributed to Yamabe no Akahito, a poet of the Man’yoshu anthology.
