A Dish Born from Consideration for a Customer
The story of omurice is said to date back to 1925. At the time, one customer regularly ordered an omelet and rice. Because he had a weak stomach, these were reportedly the only foods he could eat.
Concerned that the customer might become tired of eating the same meal every day, the restaurant’s owner came up with a new dish. He sautéed mushrooms and onions, mixed them with rice seasoned with tomato ketchup, and wrapped the mixture in a thinly cooked omelet.
This combination of omelet and rice is said to have become the beginning of omurice.
From Osaka to Japan
The new dish became popular for its delicious flavor and helped omurice spread beyond Osaka. Today, it is a familiar Japanese yoshoku, or Western-style Japanese dish, enjoyed throughout the country.
Because of its origin story and long association with Osaka, omurice can be considered one of the dishes that represents the food culture of Naniwa, the traditional name for Osaka.
