Osaka Church of the United Church of Christ in Japan

A Historic Church with Beautiful Red-Brick Architecture

The Osaka Church of the United Church of Christ in Japan is a Protestant church located in Nishi Ward, Osaka City. It was founded in 1874 by American missionary Gordon, making it one of the oldest churches in Japan with a long history and tradition.

The church is particularly known for its beautiful red-brick sanctuary, designed by William Merrell Vories in the Romanesque style. Its distinctive architecture has made it a beloved landmark among local residents and architecture enthusiasts.

Architecture and Features of the Church

A Romanesque-Style Church Building

Completed in 1922, the present church building was designed by the Vories Architectural Office. Its exterior is characterized by red brick laid in the distinctive Flemish bond pattern.

A tall spire rises behind the chapel, while a beautiful rose window is set into the gable wall on the front façade. The building is regarded as a representative example of Romanesque-style architecture and is appreciated by many visitors interested in historic buildings.

Reconstruction After the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake

The church suffered major damage and was partially destroyed in the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of 1995. Restoration and seismic reinforcement work was carried out over a period of six months, allowing the building to be restored.

The following year, in 1996, it was registered as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property. It has also been selected as part of the Living Architecture Museum Osaka Selection, recognizing its importance as part of Osaka’s architectural and cultural heritage.

Recognition as a Cultural Property

On March 15, 2022, the building was designated as an Osaka Prefectural Tangible Cultural Property under the name “Main Building of the Osaka Church of the United Church of Christ in Japan.”

This designation recognizes the church not only as a place of worship but also for its considerable historical and cultural value.

History of the Church

Its Foundation

The Osaka Church of the United Church of Christ in Japan was established in 1874 by Gordon, a missionary of the American Board. He founded the church together with five people he had baptized and two members who had transferred from the Japan Christ Church.

The church originated as the Umemotocho Church, also known as the Second Settsu Christ Church, which was established in Umemotocho, Honda, in what is now Nishi Ward, Osaka.

The church follows the tradition of the Congregationalist movement. Before the establishment of the United Church of Christ in Japan, it belonged to the Japan Congregational Church.

Connection with Baika Gakuen

Baika Gakuen, the educational corporation that operates Baika Women’s University, has its roots in cooperation between the Umemotocho Church and the Naniwa Church.

The name “Baika” combines the characters for “ume” (plum) from Umemotocho and “ka” (flower) from Naniwa Church. Baika Gakuen has continued to carry on the spirit of the churches and has made contributions to education over the years.
