History of Osaka Castle Park
The history of Osaka Castle Park can be traced back to Otemae Park, which opened in 1924 during the Taisho era.
Development of the Park and Reconstruction of the Castle Tower
In 1931, the castle tower was reconstructed, and the area was developed as Osaka Castle Park. At the time, the park covered only approximately 9.6 hectares. It has since expanded considerably to its present size.
The Park During World War II
During World War II, the present-day Sugiyama area contained major facilities of the Osaka Army Arsenal. The area was subjected to intense bombing by U.S. forces.
As a result, unexploded bombs are still occasionally discovered during construction and other civil engineering work in the surrounding area.
Modern Management and Recognition
In 2015, the Osaka Castle Park Management Joint Venture began managing and operating the entire park.
In fiscal 2018, the park received a Good Design Award for its redesign as a destination where visitors can spend extended periods of time enjoying an urban park environment.

Osaka Castle Tower and Its Views
Osaka Castle Tower rises prominently at the heart of the park. Its observation deck offers panoramic views from the uppermost floor, including distant views toward Mount Ikoma, Osaka Bay, and the Osaka Plain.
The museum inside the tower introduces the history and culture of Osaka and is a popular attraction for visitors from Japan and overseas.
Seasonal Flowers and Natural Scenery
The park contains numerous trees and flowering plants. The Plum Grove, Peach Grove, and Nishinomaru Garden are particularly well known for plum, peach, and cherry blossoms.
During the major flower-viewing seasons, the park becomes especially lively, attracting large numbers of visitors from Japan and abroad.
Cherry Blossoms at Nishinomaru Garden
Approximately 300 cherry trees grow in Nishinomaru Garden, making it a popular hanami destination in spring.
The garden has been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Sites. Special evening openings are also held during the cherry blossom season, allowing visitors to enjoy illuminated cherry trees and a more atmospheric nighttime view.
Plum Grove and Peach Grove
The Plum Grove in the Ninomaru Ichimasu Kuruwa area features approximately 1,245 plum trees representing 105 varieties.
The Peach Grove, located in the northern outer enclosure, is another popular spring attraction. In early spring, colorful blossoms brighten the castle grounds.
A Center for Music and Events
Osaka-Jo Hall and Osaka-Jo Music Hall regularly host concerts and other events, making the park an important center for entertainment and music.
At the multipurpose Sun Plaza, amateur bands and local musicians sometimes perform on Sundays, while residents also use the space to practice musical instruments.
Sports and Recreation
The park also offers a variety of sports facilities, including an archery range and Shudokan, a facility used for martial arts and other activities.
These facilities are widely used by local residents, while the extensive walking paths and open spaces provide opportunities to enjoy exercise and outdoor recreation in the heart of Osaka.
Osaka Castle Park as an Urban Oasis
The Sugiyama area has been developed as a forest park, creating a particularly green section of the grounds. Many wild birds gather around the water of the outer moat, adding to the area’s natural atmosphere.

Getting Around the Park
Road trains and electric cars operate within the park, making it easier to travel between different areas and major attractions.
These services are particularly convenient for traveling from Morinomiya Station to the park’s main sightseeing areas.
