Historical Background
Higashisumiyoshi Ward was established in 1943 after being separated from Sumiyoshi Ward. At the time, the administrative area included places such as Nagai Village, Tanabe Town, and Hirano-go Town.
In 1955, Yata Village, Uriwari Village, and other areas were incorporated, helping establish the foundations of the present-day ward. In 1974, some areas were separated to form part of the newly established Hirano Ward.
Origin of the Ward’s Name
The name “Higashisumiyoshi” means “East Sumiyoshi,” reflecting the ward’s location east of Sumiyoshi Ward.
When the ward was created, consideration was given to fairness among the areas being reorganized. Rather than naming the new ward after one particular area, such as Tanabe, Imagawa, or Hirano, the neutral name Higashisumiyoshi Ward was adopted.
